Carlos Avila has directed for companies as diverse as NBC/Universal, Warner Brothers Television, Sony Pictures Television, CBS, Jerry Bruckheimer Television, Shoreline Entertainment, New Line Cinema and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). Most recently, Carlos directed episodes of the long-running NBC fantasy / procedural series, Grimm. He also directed the “Street Money” episode of the long-running CBS series, Cold Case, which featured a breakthrough performance by Chadwick Boseman. Carlos is the creator, producer and director of Foto-Novelas (2002), a Humanitas Prize-nominated television series comprised of half-hour dramas in the spirit of The Twilight Zone. He made his feature film directing debut with New Line Cinema’s 2000 release, Price of Glory starring Jimmy Smits, Jon Seda, Clifton Collins, Jr. and Ron Perlman. This family drama set against the world of amateur and professional boxing was developed at the Sundance Institute’s Director and Writer Labs. Carlos was awarded the ALMA (American Latino Media Arts) award for Best Director for his work on this film. He also served as Executive Producer on the film’s groundbreaking soundtrack CD which introduced Latino Rock and Hip Hop to a wide audience. In 2012, Carlos completed his first documentary, Tales of Masked Men, about lucha libre (Mexican professional wrestling) and the tradition of the masked wrestler. The film was the recipient of three 2013 Best Documentary Awards at film festivals around the United States. The film has had two national broadcasts, a DVD and an iTunes release. Tales of Masked Men is also currently available for streaming in the United States on Amazon Prime Video. Carlos is currently developing a television series about Latinos in auto racing called Built for Speed, The Kill Floor, a short film about essential workers in the Covid era and a feature film called, Fast Boys, about the music scene in 1960s San Antonio, Texas. Carlos received his film training at Loyola Marymount University and UCLA’s Graduate School of Theatre, Film and Television. He is a past recipient of the prestigious Rockefeller Foundation’s Media Arts Fellowship. Carlos is a proud member of the Directors Guild of America. As the son of Mexican and Peruvian parents, he is fluent in English and Spanish.
